How does the ECO4 grant scheme work?
The ECO4 grant scheme is a government-backed initiative where energy companies provide funding for home upgrades. With £4 billion of funding available, an ECO4 grant could cover up to 100% of the cost of your energy efficiency installation. Running until March 2026, the scheme has three main goals:
- Help people find their way out of fuel poverty
- Make UK homes more energy efficient and less polluting
- Support the government target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050

How much funding can you get with an ECO4 grant?
The amount of funding available with an ECO4 grant changes on a case by case basis, depending on your situation and the solution you want.

Who’s eligible for ECO4 funding?
Eligibility for ECO4 funding is fairly straightforward. You’re in the running if:
You're a homeowner, private renter or social housing tenant
Your property has an EPC rating of D,E, F or G
You claim at least one of a certain set of benefits
If you don’t fall into the above, don’t worry!
You could still claim funding under the ECO Flex, where local authorities can refer people in their area. You’re eligible for this if you live in a property that needs energy efficiency upgrades and:
You have a combined gross annual household income under £31,000
A person in your household has a severe or long-term health condition that is worsened by living in a cold home

What is the EC04 scheme?
The ECO4 scheme is a government-backed incentive that offers grants for home insulation, solar energy installations, and A-rated heating components such as boilers and central heating systems. The purpose of ECO4 is to help homeowners make their homes more energy efficient and reduce fuel poverty. It was expanded in 2022 to include more households and offer more funding, and it will run until March 2026.
Who qualifies for ECO4?
To qualify for ECO4 funding, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be the owner/occupier of the property
- Your household income must be below a certain level
- Your home must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below
- You must live in England, Scotland, or Wales
- You must be in receipt of certain benefits

What is the ECO4 scheme for 2023?
The ECO4 scheme is a successor to the ECO3 scheme, which ended in 2022. The new scheme has been greatly expanded to include a wider range of people. £4 billion of grant money is available, or £1 billion a year until 2026. The grants are offered to low-income households to make their homes warmer, more eco-friendly, and reduce their carbon footprint.
