How insulation under the floor is installed
Here’s how Grant Store’s underfloor insulation is installed:
- We’ll remove your carpets and laminate flooring (and your floorboards, if necessary)
- A vapour barrier made of plastic sheeting is installed to prevent moisture from condensing on the underside of the insulation
- The insulation is then installed between the floor joists
- A secondary vapour barrier is added
- Your floorboards/carpet/laminate flooring are replaced again

FAQs
You must have a few questions. We’ve answered some of the most commonly-asked questions about loft insulation here, but please speak to the team if you have any more.
What type of insulation is best for underfloor?
The best type of underfloor insulation for your property will depend on your specific needs and budget. There are a few different types of insulation, including:
- EPS is a rigid foam insulation that is made from small beads of polystyrene that are expanded with gas
- XPS is similar to EPS, but it is made with a different manufacturing process that makes it more durable and resistant to moisture
- Polyurethane foam is a flexible foam insulation that is made from a chemical reaction between isocyanates and polyols
- Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper that has been treated with fire-retardant chemicals
However, we’ll carry out a thorough survey of your property before recommending which type of insulation we think is the best.
Is it worth insulating under the floor?
Yes. The average home loses about 20% of its heat through the floor, which equates to paying an extra £300 to £400 per year in energy bills. Not only that, but a well-insulated floor can make it less draughty, better soundproofed, and more eco-friendly as it won’t lose as much heat.
It also works extremely well when combined with other types of new heating technology to make your home even more eco-friendly. If you’re interested in upgrading your boiler, central heating system, heat pumps, or even a solar energy system, then speak to our expert team for advice.
What is the best way to insulate a wooden floor underneath?
There are a few different ways to put insulation under your floor, and our fully qualified and regulated installers will do their thorough due diligence before deciding which method will work most effectively for your home. Speak to the team for a FREE quote today.
Does underfloor insulation cause damp?
Underfloor insulation doesn’t cause damp on its own. However, if it’s not installed properly, it can trap moisture and lead to damp problems. This is because underfloor insulation can create a barrier that prevents moisture from escaping from the ground. Fortunately, we always install a vapour barrier between the layers of insulation to prevent this from happening.
