How the Great British Insulation Scheme works

Formerly known as ECO+, the GBIS runs parallel with the ECO4 scheme and will make £1 billion of funds available for single insulation upgrades until March 2026. Here’s how it works:

  • Speak to Grant Store – As a GBIS-qualified installer, we’re approved to give quotes for insulation upgrades.
  • Get an Energy Performance Certificate – This will assess the energy efficiency of your home and determine if you’re eligible for a grant.
  • Apply for a grant – Either online or by post. You’ll need to provide your EPC, details of your home, your homeowner status, and your combined household income.
  • Receive the grant – If your application is successful, you’ll receive a grant payment.
  • Have the insulation installed – Enjoy your warmer, more energy-efficient home.

What are the criteria for Great British Insulation Scheme funding?

Eligibility was recently split into two separate groups to make the funding accessible to more people.

This is for households that aren’t eligible for grants or funding under the ECO4 scheme. To qualify under this group, your home must be in Council Tax bands A-D in England, A-E in Scotland, and A-C in Wales. Your Energy Performance Certificate must also be a D or below.

To qualify for funding via this group, you must:

  • Be a homeowner who owns the property or rents the property as a private landlord
  • Your home must have an EPC rating of D
  • You must have received one of the following benefits within 18 months of the installation:
  • Child Benefit
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income support
  • Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit)
  • Universal Credit
  • Working Tax Credits

If you don’t qualify for Great British Insulation Scheme funding, then you might be able to receive funding via the LA Flex scheme instead. Local authorities set the qualifying criteria for LA Flex, and every local authority has its own criteria that have to be met. LA Flex is there to help the most vulnerable people in society, so click here for full eligibility details or speak to a member of our team for further help.

What are the benefits of upgrading your insulation?

The benefits of adding either roof, wall, or underfloor insulation to your home are vast, but here are some of the most important ones:

  1. Keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer: This can save you money on your energy bills.
  2. Increase the value of your home: Having top-rated insulation installed can make it easier to sell your home if you decide to move.
  3. Reduce your carbon footprint: Because your home won’t lose as much heat, it’ll reduce your carbon footprint and help the environment.
  4. Improve your air quality: This can help you breathe easier and feel healthier, which is especially important for those with underlying respiratory issues.
