Introduction

Following the success of previous regional schemes, Grant Store Ltd (GSL) was appointed to manage the delivery of the Cheshire Solar Together initiative, providing high-quality solar PV installations to households across the region as part of a collective buying programme.

Despite a significant increase in project volume compared to initial projections, GSL delivered a high standard of service throughout the scheme. The project involved coordinated efforts across surveys, installations, and customer support, with an emphasis on maintaining efficiency, transparency, and customer satisfaction.

Challenges

The project encountered several challenges, primarily due to severe winter weather conditions:

  • Internal Structure Changes: During the rollout of the Cheshire scheme, GSL underwent a strategic internal restructuring. This presented potential challenges to workflow and communication, but careful planning ensured there was no impact on customer-facing operations. Processes were reviewed and adapted to maintain our established levels of service and quality, ensuring internal delays did not translate into delays for customers or compromise satisfaction levels.
  • Volume of Work: Initial demand for the Cheshire scheme significantly exceeded expectations following the success of the collective purchase offer. GSL scaled operations rapidly to meet the increase in volume, expanding installation capacity and coordinating closely with survey teams to maintain quality. This scaling was achieved without compromising the accuracy of surveys or the standards of installation, ensuring a smooth and positive customer journey from start to finish.
  • Material Changes : During the scheme, GSL encountered national supply issues affecting certain key materials. To prevent delays and maintain our commitment to high-quality outcomes, we identified and procured alternative products that met our rigorous standards. These substitutions were implemented seamlessly, with clear communication to customers and no adverse impact on installation timelines.

Results

Despite the internal restructuring, increased demand, and national supply issues, the Cheshire Solar Together project delivered strong outcomes across a six-month delivery period:

  • Installations: GSL successfully installed 2,514 solar PV panels. Each installation was tailored to property size and energy use, with systems featuring Canadian Solar All Black panels and FoxESS battery and inverters.
  • Total Solar Capacity: The scheme added a substantial amount of clean energy generation to the local grid, helping households reduce reliance on conventional electricity sources.
  • Battery Storage Deployment: A total of 245 battery systems were installed, providing a combined storage capacity of 1,611.5 kWh. These units support greater energy independence and allow customers to maximise self-consumption of generated solar power.
  • Carbon Impact: The installed systems are set to make a significant contribution to reducing regional carbon emissions, supporting Cheshire’s broader transition to net-zero.
