What are the different types of electric boilers?

Like gas boilers, electric boilers can be either combination (combi) systems or heat-only (regular) boilers, so be sure to speak to us to find the right one for your property.

Combi boilers

Combi boilers heat up water for your radiators and taps on demand, meaning they don’t need external hot water storage cylinders. This makes them the perfect solution for smaller properties.

Heat-only boilers

Heat-only electric boilers heat and store hot water for when you need it rather than heating it on demand like a combi boiler does. They use a two-tank system (usually a larger one in the loft and a smaller one downstairs in a cupboard), so they need much more space than a combi or system boiler. This makes them a great solution for larger properties.

System boilers

Very similar to heat-only boilers, system boilers take up much less space as they have inbuilt pumps and valves to forgo the need for a secondary tank.

Why should you have an electric boiler installed?

Replacement electric boilers have some great benefits over other models of boiler, including:

  • Zero carbon emissions – the boiler itself produces no carbon at all, but to be considered carbon-neutral, the electricity that powers it must be produced from renewable sources
  • Incredibly energy-efficient – Compared like-for-like with a traditional gas boiler, you need fewer kWh of energy to produce the same amount of heat
  • Fewer moving parts – This reduces the likelihood of a breakdown and keeps maintenance to an absolute minimum
  • Quieter – There are fewer moving parts, which makes them much quieter than a traditional boiler setup
  • Flexibility of installation – They don’t need a flue or gas pipe to run to them which means electric boilers can be placed almost anywhere in the home

Are electric boilers worth it?

Is it expensive to run an electric boiler?

This depends on the price of electricity, the size of your home, and how much hot water you use. Prices of electricity from the National Grid have been rising steadily in the past few years, as have all utilities, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that an electric boiler will be any more or less expensive to run than an alternative option.

One surefire way of ensuring that your electric boiler is supplied with low-cost, green, sustainable energy is to add PV solar panels, an inverter, and a solar battery storage system, so speak to us if this is of interest.

Do I need a hot water tank with an electric boiler?

If you have a combi boiler or system boiler, then no. If, however, you have a heat-only boiler, then you’ll need to have enough space on your property for two tanks – a larger one in the loft and a smaller one in a cupboard space elsewhere in the building.
