Who qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

To be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, there are some strict criteria you have to meet:

The Basics
  • Age of Boiler: Must be at least eight years old.
  • Ownership: The applicant must own the property. Council and privately rented properties are excluded.
  • Fuel Source: The property must connect to the main gas supply. Excludes LPG gas, biomass, and oil-fueled boilers.
  • Government Benefits: Applicants must receive at least one benefit from the government’s list.

For new build or self-build properties

This scheme is not available for new-build properties that are still under construction by the developer. However, if you’ve moved into a recently finished new-build with a fossil fuel boiler, you may qualify for a heat pump grant under this scheme.

For self-built properties, eligibility depends on two factors:

  • You (or the original owner) must have personally built it or hired a builder for the construction.
  • The property cannot have been previously owned by a business or organisation.

As proof of self-build status, you’ll need to provide your installer with documentation like title deeds.
