ECO4

The latest iteration of the Energy Company Obligation, ECO4, focuses on reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty. It provides funding for energy efficiency and heating measures, including boiler replacements, primarily for low-income households and those in underprivileged communities. ECO4 is a key component of the UK’s strategy for a greener, more sustainable future.

Warmer Homes Scotland Scheme

Aimed at helping low-income households in Scotland, this scheme provides free or subsidised energy efficiency improvements, such as insulation and heating system upgrades, to reduce energy bills.

Eligibility criteria:

• Live in Scotland
• Own your home or rent privately
• Live in a home where the council tax band is A-F

NEST (Wales)

NEST offers advice and support on energy saving for Welsh households, including free energy efficiency upgrades for those who qualify. The aim is to reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

Eligibility criteria:

• You own your home or rent privately
• You receive a means-tested benefit or you live in a low-income household
• Your home has an EPC rating of 54 (E) or less;
  Or your home has an EPC rating of 68 (D) or less where you or a member of your household have an eligible health condition

The Basics

• Age of Boiler: Must be at least eight years old.
• Ownership: The applicant must own the property. Council and privately rented properties are excluded.
• Fuel Source: The property must connect to the main gas supply. Excludes LPG gas, biomass, and oil-fueled boilers.
• Government Benefits: Applicants must receive at least one benefit from the government’s list.

*If you are receiving Child Benefit, you need to be within Ofgem’s income threshold to qualify for the grant:

Couple:

• One child: £27,300
• Two children: £32,100
• Three children: £36,900
• Four or more children: £41,700

Single Claimant:

• One child: £19,800
• Two children: £24,600
• Three children: £29,400
• Four or more children: £34,200

For new build or self-build properties

This scheme is not available for new-build properties that are still under construction by the developer. However, if you’ve moved into a recently finished new-build with a fossil fuel boiler, you may qualify for a heat pump grant under this scheme.

For self-built properties, eligibility depends on two factors:

• You (or the original owner) must have personally built it or hired a builder for the construction.
• The property cannot have been previously owned by a business or organisation.

As proof of self-build status, you’ll need to provide your installer with documentation like title deeds.
