Why should you consider solar panels?

With rising energy costs and climate concerns, solar panels are quickly becoming a great investment for many homeowners looking to save money and live more sustainably.

Save on electricity bills

Solar panels generate clean, renewable energy from the sun, reducing your reliance on the grid and potentially leading to major monthly savings on utility costs.

Better energy independence

With solar panels, you become less reliant on the traditional electricity grid, offering a sense of security and independence if you live in an area prone to power outages.

Increase property value

When selling your home, you could enjoy a higher selling price from eco-conscious or financially savvy buyers who value the sustainability and savings associated with solar panels.

Make an extra income

If you produce more electricity than you use, you can sell it back to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee. Not only does this help offset the initial cost of your panels, but it also provides an additional source of income.

Environmental benefits

Solar is a clean, renewable energy source that doesn’t produce greenhouse gases, meaning you can live more sustainably and away from fossil-fuelled electricity.

Do you qualify for cheaper solar panels?

Many people find the cost of solar panel installations a hurdle, with domestic projects starting from around £5,000. But don’t worry – you could be eligible for a grant that could cover up to 100% of the cost.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)

The government-backed ECO4 grant scheme is designed to help low-income, low-efficiency households with various home heating upgrades, including solar panels.

How do you qualify for ECO4 funding?

You qualify for ECO4 funding if:

  • You are a homeowner, private renter or social housing tenant
  • Your property has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G
  • You receive at least one of a certain set of benefits, or
  • Your home needs energy-saving upgrades and
    • You have a combined gross annual household income under £31,000 or
    • A person in your household has a severe or long-term health condition that is worsened by living in a cold home
ECO Funding
VAT Reduction

There is also currently a zero-rate VAT policy for the installation of solar panels in residential properties.

Previously, the VAT rate was between 5% and 20%. With domestic solar installations starting from around £5,000, 0% VAT could cut hundreds off the overall price.

You don’t necessarily need to claim the VAT reduction yourself, as Solar installers typically factor the zero VAT rate into their quotes.

It is set to last until March 2027.

  • Child Benefit
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

Does the solar grant have to be repaid?

Under ECO4, eligible households do not have to repay any amount of the solar grant funding.

How often do solar panels need to be cleaned?

Solar panels typically require cleaning every 6 to 12 months, depending on factors such as the location, climate, and surrounding environment.

Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?

In most cases, installing solar panels on residential properties does not require planning permission. Permitted Development Rights usually allow for the installation of solar panels without formal approval, as long as certain criteria are met, such as not exceeding a certain height or going beyond the plane of the roof.

My roof is covered in shade. Can I still use solar panels?

To get the most out of solar panels, your roof needs to be unshaded between 10am and 4pm.

How long does it take to install solar panels?

The installation of solar panels typically takes around 1 to 3 days, depending on factors such as the size of the system and the complexity of the installation.

How are solar panels installed?

Installing solar panels involves a few steps. First, our experts assess the location to find the best spot for installation. We then secure the panels to the roof or ground using strong brackets. The panels are connected with wires and linked to an inverter that converts the electricity.

How long do solar panels last?

With the right care, solar panels can last for decades – most panels come with a 30-year performance guarantee, and many are expected to last much longer than that! Ready to enjoy clean, free energy for years to come? Contact our team to get started.

Can pensioners get a grant for solar panels?

Pensioners receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit Guarantee, or Housing Benefit and have a low EPC-rated home (E-G rating) are eligible for a solar panel grant via the ECO4 grant.

Do I need to tell my electricity supplier I have solar panels?

Yes, it’s necessary to let your electricity supplier know that you have installed solar panels. This is important because they need to update their records and billing system to include the electricity you generate. It also ensures that you receive any benefits or credits for the excess electricity you produce.
