ECO 4

Duration: January 2023 – May 2024

Scope: 1642 Measures, 418 Projects

Background

The ECO 4 initiative is a key part of the Energy Company Obligation, designed to enhance energy efficiency in occupied properties across the UK. This project adopts a “fabric-first” approach, focusing on comprehensive improvements to building fabric, which often involves coordination across multiple trades, making the process more complex and labour-intensive.

Challenges

The project encountered several challenges, primarily due to severe winter weather conditions:

  • Occupied Properties: Managing logistics and ensuring high customer satisfaction levels in lived-in properties is a significant challenge. This requires careful scheduling to minimise disruption and clear communication with residents to manage expectations.
  • Multi-Trade Coordination: ECO 4’s fabric-first strategy often requires a combination of trades, including insulation, gas, electrical, and renewable energy specialists. Coordinating these different trades to work seamlessly within a single property necessitates detailed project management.

Results

Despite the complexities, we have successfully delivered over 1642 energy-efficiency measures across 418 properties throughout the UK, significantly benefiting residents by reducing energy bills and improving overall comfort. Some of the key project achievements include:

  • Heating Measures: We replaced outdated and inefficient gas boilers with modern, high-efficiency models, and installed full central heating (FTCH) systems where required. This not only improved the energy performance of the homes but also provided consistent warmth during colder months, which has contributed to improved living conditions for residents.
  • Electrical Works: Enhancements included the installation of electric storage heaters, which offer better energy retention and more effective heating control. Additionally, advanced heating control systems were integrated into homes, giving residents the ability to manage their energy use more efficiently and reduce wastage.
  • Renewable Energy Solutions: As part of the commitment to sustainability, we installed renewable technologies such as Solar PV systems and Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs). These systems have enabled homeowners to generate their own clean energy, further driving down energy costs while contributing to national carbon reduction targets. The integration of renewable energy solutions has provided long-term environmental and financial benefits to the residents.
  • Apprenticeship Program: To support the delivery of these installations, we implemented an apprenticeship program, employing eight apprentices across various trades. This initiative has not only supported the project’s workforce needs but also fostered skill development in key areas such as insulation, gas systems, electrical works, and renewable energy technologies. By investing in apprentices, we have contributed to building a skilled workforce equipped to meet future energy efficiency challenges.

Conclusion

Overall, the ECO 4 project stands as a testament to our capability to manage complex, multi-trade projects, all while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and contributing to the UK’s broader goals of energy efficiency and sustainability.
