What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that covers part of the cost of replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump or biomass boiler. Fossil fuel systems include oil, gas, electric and LPG.

It is open to property owners in England and Wales. You can claim one grant per property, and it can be used for your home or a building used for your business.

How much can you get?

  • £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
  • £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps and shared ground loops
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
  • £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump

Until March 2027, homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection can get an extra £1,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, which makes £9,000.

Hybrid systems, such as a gas boiler combined with a heat pump, are not covered.

Who qualifies for the grant?

You qualify if you own the property, including a business, a second home or a property you rent out to tenants, and you are replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as oil, gas, electric or LPG.

  • You can still qualify if you have already had funding for insulation or other energy efficiency work.
  • The heat pump must be commissioned and installed within 120 days of the application.
  • Biomass boilers need an off gas, rural property and are not available for self build homes.

Most new build properties, social housing, and properties that have already received government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler are not eligible. If you move into a finished new build with a fossil fuel boiler, you may be able to claim. Read the government guidance on the scheme.
